Justice is an important facet of human life. It is one of the fundamental constitutional rights enrolled in our Constitution and we are privileged to be graced by it under any circumstances. However, minorities and ethnic and religious groups are at times subjected to intense scrutiny and oppression by the dictatorial regimes either in the form of Governmental structure or monarchy.

It is to raise a voice against such unjust practices that World Justice Day is celebrated on 20th February every year. The following details would help you learn about the significance of World Justice Day-

 

World Justice Day- Significance

World Justice Day is an event of both national and international importance and celebrated the world over with different cosmopolitan cultures engrossing in the diverse judicial rights granted to them. The following details would help us in understanding the significance of World Justice Day-

 

World Day Of Social Justice is observed on February 20 every year. The main goal behind celebrating this day is to raise a voice of appeal against all the unjust and criminal practices taking place against the religious and ethnic minority groups in the world.

The celebration of the day serves as a common platform to bring together various communities internationally to eliminate racial injustice, gender discrimination with physical and mental assault on women, subjugation of the economically weaker sections of the society and religious discrimination against the minority groups. Eradication of the aforementioned social evils would help society thrive and coexist peacefully. 

 

World Justice day is observed to eliminate all kinds of discrimination based on caste, creed, gender, economic strength and cultural background. This year the Pandemic has deprived people of the opportunity to gather physically on a common platform and celebrate the joys offered by rightful justice.

Therefore the theme of digital World Justice Day has been embraced by large masses in the population. This year aims to celebrate those institutions and organisations that worked tirelessly to find sustainable solutions to promote employment of all sections of the societal structure, promote economic and social development, ensure social protection of the masses by preserving their fundamental constitutional rights and providing them access to free justice and adequate counsel. 

 

World Justice Day- History

On 26 November 2007, the General Assembly declared that starting from the sixty-third session of the General Assembly, 20 February will be celebrated annually as the World Day of Social Justice.

The General Assembly was the body convening over the provisions of Social Justice. It was framing and executing the laws necessary for implementing social justice and was responsible for improving the social justice rendered to all segments of the society. 

 

The International Labour Organization unanimously adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization on 10 June 2008. This is the third major statement of principles and policies adopted by the International Labour Conference since the ILO’s Constitution of 1919.
