The UPSC exam is sponsored by the Central Government authorities in the country. It is instituted by Government organizations and held once each year. The examination is segregated into two different halves consisting of Prelims and Mains. You require intense preparation and studying before you are prepared to face a UPSC examination. However, at times it just happens that you sit for an examination and you are unable to clear the Prelims round. Rather than getting upset and leaving hope, you should adopt the following strategies to make a successful attempt again-
Gather Feedback from the Failed Attempt
Always remember that failure is the pillar of success. Unless you fail, you would never know what your shortcomings were. Therefore rather than getting discouraged learn from your failure. Understand where you went wrong. It might be that you did not devote enough time to the preparation. It might also happen that you did not allot time strategically to each component of the study process. Therefore only if you fail you will realize how important it is for you to reorient your studies.
Review the Questions that came in the Prelims
Review the questions that you failed to answer in your UPSC Prelims examination. Analyze the questions thoroughly. After you analyze the questions, you will be able to identify the areas where you went wrong. Work on them thoroughly. Understand the areas which caused you the most difficulty. For example- you might have missed out on most questions from the Mathematics portion or got them wrong. Therefore devote the maximum amount of time to reviewing Mathematical applications.
Do not press the Panic Button
Panicking will take you nowhere. If you panic you will not be able to gather courage and appear for the next examinations. Moreover, if you panic, you will never be able to overcome challenges in life. Therefore practice with even more determination and precise understanding of the syllabus. Panicking would create negativity in your mind. Do not encourage any mental blockage.
Give Time to Grieve
You went through a difficult schedule while preparing for the UPSC Prelims. Even if you were unable to crack the examination, you spent a lot of time preparing for it. Therefore give a break from your studies. Engage yourself in leisurely activities. Distance yourself from studies for 2-3 days. However, you need to get back on track as quickly as possible. Therefore after you have grieved long enough, come back to studying and preparing for the Prelims.
Get things in Perspective
Have clarity in your head about the direction in which you are progressing. After you have grieved for a while, analyze your situation critically. Get the things in order and perspective. First, identify the areas where you need improvement. Analyze the areas where you went wrong. Reduce and Minimize the errors as much as possible. Then come to the drawing board and chalk out the areas where you need to work upon. Exert greater effort in those areas. Once you work hard on your mistakes, you are bound to reap the rewards and benefits.
Get Help if you need it
The help you require may not always be academic help. While being engrossed in the preparation, you may also require emotional help from the people whom you consider close. Therefore accept the fact that you need support. Reach out to the people who want to help you under any circumstances. There have been many instances when it has been seen that the candidate has suffered from mental depression. After failing the first hurdle, they have locked themselves up in their world. It has only taken a toll on the body. At times it has also led to drastic steps.
Meticulously Plan for the Success
After analyzing your errors, work on minimizing them. Understand that your success is measured by how much effort you put into a work regime. Therefore critically analyze the work procedures. Only when you have invested enough effort in your work process, you can reap the rewards of success. Planning is the stepping stone to any successful endeavor. Therefore understand the demands of the examination. Plan your processes accordingly and then apply effort. It helps you generate productive results.
Preparing for the Examination is Fun. Embrace the Fun
The preparation process is difficult and involves a lot of time. Therefore it is advisable that you happily invest as much time as possible. Once you get into the flow of studies, you will derive fun and excitement from the process. Therefore try to embrace the challenges head-on.
Do not Postpone your Preparation Program
Try not to postpone your preparation program. You may hear others say that you have a lot of time before the Prelims. But it is farcical. The 12 months timeframe is too small if you are haphazard and unorganized in your approach. Therefore prepare early and understand the difficulties associated with the process of preparation.
Therefore in conclusion, while reappearing for the Prelims of UPSC, work methodically and with dedication. Determined work will help you succeed.
